Trials and tribulations of training for my second marathon

Time to get back to it

After running sporadically to not at all for the last couple of months, it's time to get back into it.  It's actually been kind of nice to take some time off after running pretty heavily for the last couple of years, but I think I'm starting to get stir crazy.  I'm kind of thinking of a late spring marathon -- perhaps up in the northeast in late May.  But first, I'll probably ease back into it over the next couple of weeks.

WNY Hills!!

One thing that has been very enjoyable about our trip to Western NY has been the abundance of hills.  The Charlotte area is very flat, which makes it difficult to incorporate hills into my marathon training program.  Up here, I've been treated to challenging hills on almost every run...from my 9-miler in Angelica to my 5.5-miler the other day in Webster.  For sure, my legs are feeling a bit more tired than they have in a while, but it's a great feeling :)

Ran 4.05 miles in 37 minutes (9:01 min/mi avg)

Ran from my mother-in-law's house down to Lake Ontario.  Had only planned to run about 3.5 miles, but I noticed a little pier at Webster Park and decided to run down to the end.  Spent a few minutes taking in the scenery and turned around and ran back.  Fairly nice hill on Holt Road as well.

Ran 4 miles in 37 minutes (9:15 min/mi avg)

Ran from my mother-in-law's house to Wegmans and back.  I actually stopped for some lunch at Wegmans, which made for a tough return trip (I had a 7" sub, which was way too much food).

Angelica Heritage Days 5k

Wasn't my best run.  My shins were really tight which is extremely unusual for me, and I felt pretty fatigued throughout the race.  However, I still finished with a pretty decent time for me -- somewhere around 26:30 (it was manually timed, and I didn't write down what my time was).

It wasn't the most organized race I've run, however it was 1st year of the race and there were only about 30 participants so it really wasn't a big deal.  The weather wasn't ideal either --it rained for most of the race--but it wasn't too cold.  However it was really great that I got to catch up with a few people from my hometown.  Overall, it was a pretty nice race and I hope that I'll be in town to run it again next year.

Ran 2 miles in 18 min (9:00 min per mile avg)

Didn't really have much time to get out today, but somebody pissed me off at work and I really needed to blow off some steam.  A nice, easy 2 mile run did just the trick.  Now, if only I could get all of my work finished before I head out on vacation....

Ran 8.1 miles in 1hr 16min (9:26 min per mile avg)

Was on the road at about 6:15 this morning to beat the heat. Had a
really great run despite not sleeping well at all last night. Could
have easily run another mile or two, but decided not to push my luck.
Don't need to injure myself before the "real" training even starts.
Plus, I'm planning on a 9-miler for next weekend in the rolling hills
of Angelica :)

Ran 2.9 miles in 27 min (9:28 min per mile avg)

Ugh...it was miserably hot and humid. Running at lunchtime is not
ideal here in the summer.

Ran 3.1 miles in 27 min (8:50 min per mile avg)

Hot + humid = HEADACHE!! Still, sub 9min miles is faster than I've
been running lately, so not a terrible run. Actually felt really
strong until the headache hit in the last mile or so.
